advisor. This is because Virgo embodies the principles of discretion, analysis, probity and critical circumspection. Virgo is not easily bamboozled by flowery words or grand gestures. This is the zodiac's sign of the ultimate strat­egist, the chess player, the reserved observer who prefers to watch from the sidelines and act with caution, precision and good timing.

The Emotional Pedant

The planet Mercury rules Virgo and its well-known emblem is the virgin. Both symbolize Virgo Moon qualities. This is a different manifestation of the Gemini Mercury - less frivolous, more grounded and tending to the analytical and the pedantic, even in emotional matters. Virgo Moons do share certain qualities with Gemini - wit, humor, intellect, quick minds - but there is a gulf of difference, especially when it comes to more serious matters. And what could be more serious than matters of the heart?

Virgo is the sixth house of the zodiac, representing the ideal of service, of selflessness, giving, healing and care. Its role as counselor derives from the Virgo willingness to stay on the fringes of the action and to not seek the center of attention. Virgo Moons have a nurturing quality that is mixed with an ele­ment of discipline. Unlike the Cancer Moon, whose nurturing is fluid, the Virgo Moon seeks to cultivate growth in a more 'struc­tured' way and thus there is more of an.element of discipline to the Virgo Moon nurturing. The emphasis is on conscious care and thus you will find that the Virgo Moon is very aware of the little details that would pass lesser mortals by. The principle of purity plays a large role in the character of Virgo Moons. At the root of this trait is the striving for perfection, the attainment of the ideal - even to the point of the transcen­dent, a state unsullied by the mundane 'dirtiness' of this world. The trick for the Virgo Moon is to give this concern a strategic context - the detail has importance only within the bigger picture. The better they are able to learn this, the more relevant and effective their keen eye for what's right. And if it seems that they don't have their own act together, this is not a problem for them and belies your immature understanding of who and what they are - for them, their ability to be concerned about you first is a form of sacrifice, a high-minded submission of their own interests to yours and to the greater good.

The Virgo Moon's striving for order derives from their sense of natural equilibrium and they are uncomfortable, even hindered, when an accustomed order is lacking. Taken to the extreme, this trait is part of what makes them dyed-in-the-wool creatures of habit. They do what works because they know it works. This is great when it comes to keeping systems alive, but not when change is needed, or when flux threatens the status quo. The Virgo reflex is to recoil from sudden change. They can deal with it when it's well thought-out, planned down to the detail and properly timed, but not otherwise. Virgo habit becomes a weakness when they forget to poke their head above the parapet to get a view of the bigger picture. In short, if left to their own devices, Virgo is the rut of the zodiac. To avoid this, now and then the Virgo Moon needs to take stock, use that analytical mind and revise their views. This helps to keep them fresh and lets their other strong qualities find expression, one of which is discrimination.

Virgo Moons are usually quite perceptive when it comes to dealing with others, although they can make judgements too quickly. Like the mercurial Gemini Moon, they have a strong curiosity, but while the Gemini Moon expresses this as a desire to explore and experience, the Virgo Moon is much more concerned about scrutiny and understanding. Nothing superficial for the Virgo Moon - even if they draw the same conclusions as a Gemini Moon, or others in general, their methods of getting there tell them that they have a more reliable understanding.

This approach is fortified by their strong sense of purpose and direction. The very qualities that can put them into a rut also give them the ability to stay the course, to persevere beyond others' expectations or abilities. 'Steady wins the race' with a Virgo Moon. They normally accomplish what they put their mind to and have good levels of concentration

, focus and stamina. They tend to become immersed in their work - in fact, can be workaholics with no other interests to get them away from their desks. Of course, this tends to make them very good at what they do and in time they usually succeed in creating a secure position for them­ selves based on their steadiness and reliability.

Virgo Moons have a yearning for faraway lands and are keen to explore other cultures. They tend to be fascinated by foreign traditions and are fond of travel. In fact, they often do very well living away from their place of birth. At the very least this gives them a chance to discover and cultivate broader aspects of their own personality.
